RAFAEL DÍAZ
El 20 de febrero de 2021, Rafael Díaz publicó una foto en su cuenta de Instagram. “Me dieron este billete,” escribió. En su superficie, se leía: 6.402 ejecuciones extrajudiciales. Desde hace años, Rafael sella billetes con mensajes que buscan descolocar a quien los recibe, ya sea a través de las transacciones diarias, o como imágenes en redes sociales. Durante la pandemia, que restringía la movilidad de los cuerpos en el espacio público, el gesto parecía responder a la necesidad de continuar subvirtiendo la cotidianidad a partir de lo único que parecía seguir circulando—dinero e imágenes.
On February 20, 2021, Rafael Díaz posted a photo on his Instagram account. “Someone gave me this bill,” he wrote. On its surface, it read: 6,402 extrajudicial executions. For years, Rafael has been stamping banknotes in ink with messages that seek to unsettle whoever receives them, either through daily transactions or as images on social networks. During the pandemic, a period where the mobility of bodies in public space was restricted, the gesture responded to the need for subverting everyday life through the only things that seemed to continue circulating —money and images.

El papel, pese a su nobleza y aparente fragilidad, ha sido históricamente uno de los soportes más confiables para transmitir mensajes, tanto así que imprimimos sobre él retratos de próceres, figuras y paisajes emblemáticos para el país y los cargamos de valor de cambio que intercambiamos por bienes y servicios.

El gasto de uno es el ingreso del otro, el papel circula de mano en mano y en un día puede pasar por cientos de manos y (dependiendo de su denominación) por varios exámenes para comprobar su autenticidad. Todo esto sin perder su valor de cambio, ni tampoco su condición primaria: es papel.

Podemos decírselo al amigo, a quien está cerca, al vecino, pero el mensaje perdurará más si lo ponemos sobre un papel y se difundirá más si lo hacemos sobre el papel moneda, ya que está hecho para viajar de mano en mano, para ser mirado, observado y cuidado.

Decante su idea hasta la expresión más sencilla: una frase es lo ideal.
Escriba o imprima sobre el billete. Use el papel como papel.

Lo importante es la circulación: tome una fotografía y publíquela en sus redes. Si hay algo que vale y circula al mismo nivel que el dinero son las imágenes.
HOW TO INSERT YOURSELF INTO IDEOLOGICAL CIRCUITS WITHOUT BEING DETECTED

Paper, in spite of its nobility and apparent fragility, has been used throughout history as one of the most reliable surfaces to transmit messages— to the point that we print on it the faces of national heroes, emblematic figures and landscapes, we invest them with trade value, and exchange them for goods and services.

One’ s expense is the other’s income, the paper circulates from hand to hand and, in one day, it can pass through hundreds of hands and (depending on its denomination), through several inspections to verify its authenticity. All this without losing its exchange value, nor its primary condition: it is paper.

We can say it outloud to a friend, to someone close to us, to our neighbor, but the message will last longer if we put it on paper and it will spread more if we choose to do it on banknotes, since they are designed to travel from hand to hand, to be looked at, observed, and cared for.

Hone your idea and condense it to its simplest expression: one phrase is ideal.
Write it down, or stamp the banknote with it. Use paper as just paper.

Circulation is what matters: take a picture and share it in your social media. If there is anything as valuable and mobile as money, it is images.

Since 2014 he has operated Más Allá, a space for artists’ workshops where exhibitions, talks, laboratories, workshops, and small concerts are held.
